Building Inspection

The Town of Amherst enforces the Nova Scotia Building Code Regulations. These Regulations adopt the National Building Code of Canada, 2005 which together with the Regulations shall be known as the “Nova Scotia Building Code” and may be referred to as the “Code”. The Code is a set of regulations which state the minimum standards of construction of all new and renovated buildings in Nova Scotia. The goal of the Code is to ensure that all buildings in Nova Scotia are safe and accessible.

In order to enforce the Code a building permit is required prior to commencing construction within the Town. All new buildings and any additions or alterations to buildings within the Town require a building permit, including all garages and any sheds which have an area greater than 215 sqft. All structural renovations and any other type of renovation valued over $5000 also require a building permit. Acquiring a building permit assures a property owner that the construction meets the minimum requirements as set out by the Code as well as meeting the requirements of the Town’s Land Use Bylaw.

In order to apply for a building permit, please contact our Building Inspector, Tim Peters. Tim can be reached at 664-7331 or by Email at tpeters@town.amherst.ns.ca . In order to issue a building permit an application must be completed, including details on the type and method of construction. See our brochure for more details(click here to open brochure).
